Howard Basnight was raised on the water, spending most of his formative years fishing and hunting the bountiful grounds of coastal North Carolina. After graduating from NC State University with a business degree, Howard spent nearly 10 years in the banking business – providing him with an excellent foundation in customer relations, lending and finance. But the pull of the ocean was too strong and Howard left the corporate world in 1988 to start a sportfishing charter business in Morehead City, North Carolina.
In nearly 10 years of chartering, Howard won numerous tournaments and his boat, Wave Runner, was perhaps best remembered by his catch of a rare North Carolina Grander (1002 pounds) blue marlin in the inaugural North Carolina Band the Billfish Tournament. Howard left the charter business to become a private boat captain for several years and last ran a beautiful 54’ Jarrett Bay.
As a charter and private captain, Howard fished many mid-Atlantic Tournaments – including Virginia Beach, Pirate’s Cove, Hatteras, Big Rock, Ducks Unlimited, Wrightsville Beach and Charleston. This time on the tournament trail gave Howard invaluable insight into the boating and fishing lifestyle and helped him to develop an impressive network of industry contacts.
With over 40 years of boating experience, Howard decided in 2004 to bring his boating knowledge to Jarrett Bay Yacht Sales. Howard’s career at Jarrett Bay has been highlighted with the sale of a 70’ and 67’ Jarrett Bay. In addition, Howard has successfully delivered new Hatteras motoryachts and convertibles, along with numerous Albemarle’s and CABOs. Howard has also been successfully involved in the brokerage end of the business – listing and selling a wide variety of brands and models of boats.
Howard has held a US Coast Guard Captain’s License since 1988 and delivered boats from Hyannis, Massachusetts to South Florida – including trawlers, motoryachts and convertibles. Howard has been a member of the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament Board of Directors for over 20 years and serves on their Rules Committee in addition to providing oversight for Big Rock Landing – home of some of the top area charter boats in Morehead City.
Howard and wife Carol have two grown children. Howard’s hobbies include boating with friends and family and of course, the two black labs. In addition, Howard continues to fish and hunt. Howard enjoys sharing his talents as an honest advocate for his clients – whether buying or selling – new or used boats. Absolute integrity is paramount to Howard, along with providing invaluable advice and support – all of which will carry on Howard’s customer service legacy long after the buying or selling process.
